This toolkit is a working draft of a resource designed to help pharmacists overcome barriers related to the establishment of collaborative practice agreements for the administration of adult and adolescent vaccines in community settings. It is our belief that resources such as this will foster working relationships between pharmacists, physicians and public health officials that will help to address the urgent need to increase California's immunization rates and prevent deaths from vaccine preventable diseases.

Pharmacy-based vaccination programs are important because pharmacies provide a level of patient access that most clinics and physician offices are unable to achieve. California is currently one of 41 states that provide pharmacists with the authority to administer vaccinations. While California pharmacists have had this authority for several years, very few pharmacists have gone through the necessary steps to incorporate this important service into their practice. It is for this reason that the Pharmacy Foundation of California partnered with the American Pharmacists Association to pursue a project designed to identify and overcome barriers related to the development and implementation of pharmacist-based immunization programs.

As a visitor to this website, you have an opportunity to provide us with valuable feedback on what what resources you find particularly valuable in this online toolkit, which items need improvement and which areas we might have left unaddressed. Please do not hesitate to submit any comments and suggestions to Michael Negrete, Pharm.D., at mnegrete@pharmacyfoundation.org.
